Fertility drugs need better monitoring

An article posted yesterday in the Vancouver Sun spoke about the drugs fertility doctors are giving their patients. The cause for concern may stem from younger and relatively healthy women moving to these drugs as a means of attaining a pregnancy faster.

How to optimize for IVF success

I was asked by a woman for a list of tips and things she could do herself to best optimize for IVF success. The following is my ever growing list. Simply choose a few of the items below and commit to being consistent with their implementation. Your plan must be sustainable and in no way shape or form ADD stress to your life, that would be extremely counter productive. Many of the resources below are further explained by clicking on them or visiting here

Laser vs. Needle Acupuncture for Embryo Transfer

We sometimes get asked whether we use laser acupuncture to support clients on embryo transfer day, and the answer is no. To date, approx 20 quality studies have been done regarding the administration of acupuncture on embryo transfer day during an IVF cycle. From this list there has only been one study that included the use of laser acupuncture.

Acupuncture for IVF in Vancouver

Women and couples come to me at various stages of their journey to conception. Sometimes they have been trying for years and others they are just starting out. While conceiving naturally is everyone’s first choice, alternatives that garner the same results; a baby, should not be overlooked. It is for this reason that I have written this blog.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a term used to describe the current western medical treatments available for women and couples having difficulty conceiving and desiring or requiring medical aid such as In Vitro Fertilization.

"I am 1 in 6" Infertility Awareness Week 2015: May 19th - 28th

Next week kicks off infertility awareness week. It will be the third year that Yinstill has been a part of this great cause. This year’s national campaign is entitled: “I am 1 in 6” The Infertility Awareness Association of Canada (IAAC) has launched this campaign for this year to really highlight just how many couples struggle with fertility challenges. The goal of the campaign is to empower more people to speak out about their fertility challenges and the experiences they have endured during their journey.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Can Help You Get Pregnant

In the modern context of reproductive medicine and fertility, Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are finding their place and becoming an integral aspect of men’s and women’s reproductive health. Alongside these modalities, a conventional medical diagnosis is an essential way to understand the body and correct treatment often relies on accurate information regarding our hormones, blood levels, and an array of other details.

What should I eat during my IVF cycle?

As a naturopathic doctor, I get this question A LOT. Women generally aren’t given very specific guidance around how they should be eating when undergoing fertility treatment since IVF clinics are so busy and there is lots of information like injections, labs, imaging, schedules, etc, to go over without delving into nutrition. However, this often neglected aspect of a woman’s life is of great importance. After all, you are what you eat.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can Support IVF

The reasons for choosing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) are as diverse and numerous as are the patients themselves, but what people do have in common is a deep rooted desire to love and start a family. IVF/IUI can be challenging as people invest time, energy, and money into a process that is still mysterious and constantly evolving as new technologies are used and innovations in hormonal protocols are made.

Supporting Follicular Genesis with Acupuncture and Self-Care

The egg you release this menstrual cycle has actually been in its final phase of maturation for the past 3 menstrual cycles. That is when the pre-antral follicle stage began; during this time the follicle grows from 0.2 mm to about 20 mm when the follicle is finally mature and the egg is ready for fertilization. Many follicles grow at the same time during the pre-antral stage. The follicles become “antral” once there is a fluid-filled sac which surrounds the egg.

The other side of the ART equation

As of a 2009 CDC survey, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) births represented 1.4%of total US births, or 60,190 infants. It is now estimated that over 5 million births worldwide have been the result of medical reproductive intervention, a long way to come after the birth of the very first “test tube baby” in 1978. However, these advances have not come without their own concerns. In the same 2009 survey, it was also stated that 33.4% of ART births were born preterm, compared to a 12.2% rate found in natural births, and 47% were multiple births, compared to a general rate of 3%.

How to Improve a Thin Uterine Lining to Increase Fertility: Part 2

thin uterine lining treatment vancovuer

Every woman that has gone through or is currently involved in assisted reproductive therapy will know that the thickness of her uterine lining is almost as important as the number of eggs that are developing. To use the common metaphor of growing a garden; the soil must be sufficiently nourished for the seed to have success once it is planted. During an IVF cycle or IUI cycle, a woman will be given different medications that will either directly or indirectly increase the estrogen delivered to the uterus and more specifically, the endometrial lining.
