Naturopathic Medicine and IVF: How a holistic approach can help improve your chances of success

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is now responsible for 1% of all births in North America. This assisted reproductive technology is definitely on the rise and is something I come across everyday in practice. Patients seek support at Yinstill Reproductive Wellness because there is something missing from their treatment regimen at the fertility clinic. Often times women come into Yinstill wanting to know how they can complement their upcoming IVF, FET (frozen embryo transfer) or IUI (intrauterine insemination) cycle with natural treatments.

Getting Pregnant...Again

Are you struggling to conceive this time around? Time and time again our Fit 4 Two alumni tell us how although they got pregnant quickly the first time, it just doesn’t seem to happen as easily the second time around.

PCOS Treatment - Step #1

First of all, I want to express my humble opinion that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a very treatable condition if commitment to necessary lifestyle changes and recommended treatment is sustained over a reasonable period of time. This should be empowering and aid in cultivating hope that you can restore health and achieve pregnancy.

Armpits for August: PCOS gets its own awareness month

This month marks the second annual event named Armpits 4 August, an event that raises awareness for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Although not as well known as Movember, the month in which men grow their moustaches for prostate cancer awareness, Armpits 4 August will likely see an increase in the number of supporters for this years event. So if you see women with fuzzy underarms you now know why they are doing it and you may even want to ask them if you can donate to their cause.

Massage for Fertility

Tops three things to consider in how massage can benefit fertility.

1. A harmonious sonata happens between your nerves and hormones as you relax into your massage. A gentle shift in stimulation of the nervous system from 'fight or flight' to 'rest and digest' can change the function that nurtures the activities of hormones that play a big role in fertility success.

Avoid these things to Optimize fertility...

There are many toxins in our environment that are known to disrupt hormonal balance and are contributing factors in conditions such as infertility, PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, premature ovarian failure, recurrent pregnancy loss, and anxiety.

Medical Testing and Self-Monitoring

It is important to understand when it is time to ask your doctor to begin to run basic testing, at the very least to rule out the obvious like ensuring the Fallopian tubes are clear via HSG (hystero - uterus, salpingo - tubes, gram - image), and whether there is any sperm being ejaculated. Once these two tests are done, at least you can take a breath and move forward knowing that sperm is present and that it can get to the egg. A Chinese medicine treatment plan, when committed for enough time, can make many changes in your life, overall health, and fertility potential.

Advanced Maternal Age and Fertility

A big piece here is to understand how to guide intention. As the body ages it gives less and less resources to the function of reproduction. This happens as a result of the body’s decrease in overall resources and the growing need of other more life sustaining systems. Thus, a decline in the health of the reproductive organs (eggs included) when a woman is over the age of 35.

These simple facts direct our goals for treatment in traditional Chinese medicine;

Does Stress Affect Fertility?

The short answer is ‘Yes’.

However, a more accurate answer is that stress affects some women’s capability to build a happy healthy family, and seems not to affect others.

Infertility and Psychology

"Stress evaluation that precedes or is concurrent to fertility treatment is suggested." This is the conclusion from the following paper published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.

Chinese Medicine treats the pain associated with Endometriosis

The prevalence of endometriosis is much more common than you might think, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada report that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age have endometriosis and it was found to be present in at least half of the women who report experiencing chronic pelvic pain. For many women it may go undiagnosed until later in life when they experience fertility challenges. The most common symptom associated with endometriosis is pelvic pain that may range from mild to extreme and is directly related to the menstrual cycle.

Nutrition to Support Conception and Pregnancy

Guest post by Sharon Pendlington, Registered Holistic Nutritionist

When I became pregnant with my first child, 12 years ago, I knew very little about nutrition. I really believed that I was ‘eating for two’ and that I had an excuse to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. It wasn’t until almost a decade later that I understood that what I ate while pregnant affected the health of my child.

Acupuncture can reduce Cholesterol

Keeping an eye on our cholesterol levels is essential for heart health and overall blood flow. While cholesterol is essential for bodily functions, too much of the wrong kind is bad. It comes in different forms in our body: low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are sticky and clog our arteries, and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) which are not sticky and actually help to reduce cholesterol levels. If you have been to the grocery store lately and waited in the check out line you will most likely have been bombarded by the annual obsession with weight loss and fad diets. On either side of the line the magazine rack will be taunting you with questions like Are You An Emotional Eater? (Marie Claire) , or suggesting you Shed Two Sizes (Women’s Health) or luring you with 15 ways to lose 15 pounds (Glamour).

Dr. Oz - Hormone Balance 101

Both mine and my wife's favorite magazines (Success & Oprah, you guess which is who's!) always feature an article by the famous Dr. Oz. Below are the pearls of one of his recent columns on Hormone balance. He likens the hormones that run a women's body to an orchestra: '...each plays its own part in creating a perfect concert - until the day one is out of tune and throws off the entire melody.'

First Days of Life Determine Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Exposure to estrogens in the first days and weeks of a newborns life may be the cause of irreversible Polycystic Ovaries according to neurobiochemistry research from the University of Santiago Chile. This affects follicular/egg development and ovulation causing the characteristic long or absent menstrual cycles of women with polycystic ovaries.

Reclaiming Fertility

More and more women today are seeking fertility assistance. Stats Canada noted a decline in women having children in their 20’s and an increase in women conceiving in their 30’s. Overall, up to 15% of Canadian women from 18-44 years of age are having difficulty conceiving (a twofold increase from 1992).

Fertility declines in the woman’s 30’s and progressively becomes more difficult after age 35. Physiological reasons for lowered fertility rates include:

The other side of the ART equation

ivf vancovuer

As of a 2009 CDC survey, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) births represented 1.4%of total US births, or 60,190 infants. It is now estimated that over 5 million births worldwide have been the result of medical reproductive intervention, a long way to come after the birth of the very first “test tube baby” in 1978. However, these advances have not come without their own concerns. In the same 2009 survey, it was also stated that 33.4% of ART births were born preterm, compared to a 12.2% rate found in natural births, and 47% were multiple births, compared to a general rate of 3%.

How to Improve a Thin Uterine Lining to Increase Fertility: Part 2

thin uterine lining treatment vancovuer

Every woman that has gone through or is currently involved in assisted reproductive therapy will know that the thickness of her uterine lining is almost as important as the number of eggs that are developing. To use the common metaphor of growing a garden; the soil must be sufficiently nourished for the seed to have success once it is planted. During an IVF cycle or IUI cycle, a woman will be given different medications that will either directly or indirectly increase the estrogen delivered to the uterus and more specifically, the endometrial lining.
