Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR) & Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
Understanding these diagnoses with compassion and clarity
What are DOR and POI?
- Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR): When the number and quality of eggs in the ovaries is lower than expected for a woman’s age. Women with DOR often still have regular cycles but may find it harder to respond to fertility treatments or IVF.
- Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): A more severe form of reduced ovarian function that happens before age 40. Periods may become irregular or stop altogether. Unlike menopause, ovarian activity may return at times.
Both diagnoses can feel overwhelming. Many women describe them as a shock, carrying feelings of grief, urgency, or fear. It’s important to remember that while these conditions can make conception more difficult, options and supportive care still exist.
How DOR & POI Affect Fertility
- Fewer eggs are available, and those remaining may not develop as easily into healthy embryos.
- Fertility treatments like IVF may be less effective, especially with DOR.
- With POI, natural conception is more rare, but not impossible – some women do ovulate sporadically.
- In both conditions, miscarriage risk can be higher due to changes in egg quality.

How We Work Alongside Conventional Care
If you are pursuing IVF or considering donor eggs, acupuncture can be a complementary therapy that supports your body and mind through the process.
We coordinate care with your medical team and recommend starting acupuncture 6-12 weeks before an IVF cycle when possible, to prepare your body and reduce stress.
Partner Health Matters Too
When egg numbers are limited, sperm health becomes even more critical to embryo success. Supporting your partner’s fertility through lifestyle, supplements, and acupuncture can make a meaningful difference.
Closing Reassurance
Receiving a diagnosis of DOR or POI can feel devastating – but you do not have to face it alone. With compassionate care, integrative support, and collaboration with your medical team, many paths forward remain open.
