Thank you for helping us become pregnant
Thank you for helping us become pregnant
Thank you for helping us become pregnant

Darryl and I just wanted to write to you and say “thank you” for helping us become pregnant with our little miracle. From the time I wrote you, Lorne, and spoke to you on the phone I felt that we were in good hands. During our first consult with the IVF clinic, we were told that due to my ovarian cysts and my husband’s male factor issues, our chances weren’t good. I needed to get those cysts removed before we would be allowed into the program. This was step one. Lorne, you helped prepare my body for surgery, and my recovery was remarkable. When the ultrasound tech looked at my ovaries post-op, she couldn’t believe how healthy they looked. The advice you and your staff provided to Darryl and I was invaluable. As was advice that you provided to an acupuncturist in Regina, as we lived so far away. This enabled me to get treatments even though I was not in Vancouver. I know the acupuncturist here really appreciated the advice.

During the IVF protocol, you reassured us that all was going well, and it was. A woman my age (especially with my surgery) wasn’t supposed to be able to have all those eggs!! I felt next to no side effects from all the IVF drugs and responded so well. Before ER I was given acupuncture and a wonderful massage by Raeghan. I felt nothing during the procedure.

When it was time for ET I was relaxed with the treatments, both before and after. Advice was again provided to reassure us that what I was feeling was normal, and not to worry. Obviously, it worked as we will be meeting our little one soon! Thanks again to all of you, Lorne, Raeghan, Spence, and Melissa!! We will be sending you a picture of her as soon as she is born. To anyone else considering IVF or just having fertility problems, please take the time to sit down and talk to Acubalance. They have so much to offer couples struggling with infertility. We believe that this is the difference between a positive pregnancy test and a negative one!

The Roller Coaster
The Roller Coaster
The Roller Coaster

For me, the infertility roller coaster started on Day 1 of every cycle….the anticipation of timing things perfectly, the agonizing two week wait and the knife in my heart when I knew I wasn’t pregnant…again and again and again and again. Through all of this, Spence and Raeghan and Lorne brought a healing touch to my treatments. Even while they were prescribing vile Chinese herbs to drink, it felt wonderful to be in their care. They treated me as a whole person and not just my reproductive system. They talked to me and listened to me – something that I felt was missing from my experiences at the fertility clinic. Each of them has a unique style and each, in their own way, is an outstanding healer.

I am now a mum to a beautiful 6 month old son…after rounds of Clomid, IUI, superovulation, an IVF and a high-risk pregnancy. Lorne, Spence and Raeghan supported me through all of this. Each time I left Acubalance, I felt relaxed, more hopeful and better able to cope with the on-going stress of infertility. I attribute the successful IVF to the acupuncture treatments I received throughout the process. I feel lucky that I found Acubalance as early on in the process as I did.
Being unable to conceive naturally is an experience that only those who have been through it can really understand. Lorne and his team at Acubalance have experienced infertility with their patients. Their understanding of the pain of infertility, their knowledge of Chinese medicine and their compassion were invaluable as they helped me to conceive.

Would enthusiastically recommend Dr. Pentland…

“My main goal when I approached Dr. Pentland for acupuncture treatment was to help me with anxiety and stress relief following up to and including my IVF procedure. Both of these goals were met. Dr. Pentland has a very sincere, caring manner that is both professional and respectful. I was very much at ease with Dr. Pentland and was particularly impressed with how familiar he was with the IVF procedure. I have no idea whether acupuncture helped medically the IVF procedure work, but I’m pregnant now and that’s all I really care about. I would enthusiastically recommend Dr. Pentland if you’re considering acupuncture treatment for fertility issues.” -Erin

There’s a saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. In our case, it took a village to create a child

There’s a saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. In our case, it took a village to create a child. Well, maybe not a village, but a team of dedicated medical professionals who’s one goal was to help us create our child.

I’ve wanted a child of my own for most of my life. After my first love died too young, I thought through the pros and cons of having a child on my own but decided against it, thinking at the time that I was giving up on my dream. I embraced other people’s children, my nephews, god children and honorary nieces and nephews to fill the void. When I was in my early 40’s I met the man who is now my husband and it was important to both of us to create a family of our own. Following a miscarriage at almost 10 weeks in early July 2003, I got a lot of advice and referrals and ended up with my “village” – my wonderful OB/GYN, a fertility specialist and my acupuncturist. For a year, I followed a regimen that included western and Chinese treatments to improve fertility. In the end I had to face the fact that if I wanted a child I needed to consider donor egg ivf or adoption. Donor egg ivf would give me the opportunity to carry a child and my husband a genetic child of his own so we decided on that route. I set a time limit for myself to get pregnant on my own before proceeding down the donor egg ivf path and in Dec 2004 we started down that path.

One of my big concerns with donor egg ivf was getting around the idea that the child I would carry would not be genetically mine and whether that would make me feel as if the child wasn’t mine. My other concern was for the health and safety of the donor, who was doing this to fulfill my dream so I was desperately worried about the process for her. I was somewhat calmed during our initial meeting with our ivf doctor and his team. They had good success rates for both pregnancy and low rates of complications arising from the process. I also learned that the gestational mother has some bearing on some genetic traits as the “turning on” of the genes are somewhat dictated by the conditions in the womb which is why cloned sheep don’t look alike. A small detail maybe but it was huge for me.

We proceeded with the ivf process and at the beginning of May 2005 I was implanted with 3 embryos. And two weeks later a blood test revealed I was pregnant. An ultrasound at 5 weeks showed 1 beating heart and one unsuccessful implantation which I miscarried at 7 weeks. The rest of my pregnancy was routine and I was induced at 39.5 weeks (pre-eclampsia) and our boy was born 2 days later via c-section.

That was 5 years ago and our boy is our pride and joy and we cannot imagine our lives without him. He looks like a mini version of his father although he wrinkles his nose the same way I do. When he was a baby I used to be taken aback when people told me “oh he looks like you” because I thought it wouldn’t be possible. But as time goes by, the only time I think about our genetic differences is at medical appointments. I may be deluded in thinking that because I carried him, and my mum carried me, that part of her lives on in him. But for the most part, I don’t think about those things. I just think that we are so blessed to have our funny, smart, independent, truck mad, friendly child. And I give thanks to my “village” for playing such a huge role in his birth and to the donor who made it all possible.

Very important to be comfortable on embryo transfer day

When I first heard about a new acupuncture service on site at PCRM, I was so glad because of a convenience. I had a really great relaxing experience on the day of embryo transfer. In my opinion, it is very important to be comfortable on this day of treatment. I was surprised of the calm environment: warm bed and blanket, pleasant scent of essential oils and relaxing meditation.

Many thanks to Dr. Spence Pentland.

Thought I would give accupuncture a try
Thought I would give accupuncture a try
Thought I would give accupuncture a try

I found it to be relaxing and calmed me down a little. I was super nervous as not knowing what the outcome is going to be in a few weeks time especially since I have had treatment done many times and have been unsuccessful so thought I would give accupuncture a try as it is supposed to help with blood flow and all. Having the clinic onsite is great, helps decrease some of the stress of having to drive around to places and make it for the transfer on time.

Thank you so much to Dr Pentland he was great!

20 YEAR JOURNEY COMPLETED!
20 YEAR JOURNEY COMPLETED!
20 YEAR JOURNEY COMPLETED!

Wow, I’m not sure where to begin, I think the title alone says a lot. I just wish I had learned about Spence a lot sooner. I first learnt of Spence from a flyer in the waiting room of the IVF office in the fall of 2008. At the time I was only days away from retrieval. This was technically our 2nd attempt at IVF but the first one was 10 years prior, it took us that long to muster up the courage and strength (emotionally) to give IVF another try. In the meantime we had tried numerous alternative therapies with no success, and also taken time off to enjoy life too.

After reading the flyer and how acupuncture could increase the chances of success with IVF dramatically, I convinced my husband that we should give it a try, even this late into the cycle. So we did, I think I was only able to get in 2 treatments prior to retrieval and then the double treatment on the day of. Lo and behold it worked, we were pregnant! Prior to this, as I mentioned earlier, we had tried one IVF cycle, but even before that we had tried numerous Ovulation Induction cycles, all to no avail. So you can imagine the surprise and excitement the news of this pregnancy brought. Unfortunately it was short lived, it turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy in the tube, which ruptured, and I ended up undergoing emergency surgery and losing my tube.

My mental and emotional savior during that time was what I had read and learnt in the book The Power of Now (I would highly recommend it to everybody going through this very challenging journey). I was able to remember (as I was being wheeled into the OR) the power of surrendering to the moment and accepting what is. As soon as I totally accepted what was in that moment, I felt immensely lighter. There were no more feelings of why me, why us, what did we do wrong, what are we being punished for… I accepted it for what it was and moved on with the healing process.

We decided we weren’t going to give up hope yet, we would try just one more IVF cycle. I managed to convince my husband that we still incorporate acupuncture into our treatment as I was absolutely convinced it had helped with our last cycle and would do so again, or at the very least it would cause no harm. I started seeing Spence in January 2008 on a regular basis, adjusted my diet a little (I never was able to totally give up my sweet tooth!), and went back to doing my hot yoga classes 3-4 times a week. In August we started our fresh IVF cycle (prior to that we had 2 FET cycles, one of them resulted in a ‘clinical’ pregnancy, the other no pregnancy). This time I produced even more eggs than ever before (I won’t say how many, the number might scare you!) but even better than that, the quality of the eggs was excellent, the best I’ve ever had with all the previous treatments! And our results just kept getting better, 70% of the eggs fertilized and all of them continued to blastocyst stage (Day 5)! We had never had such excellent results before, the only thing I can attribute these results to is the acupuncture as that is the only thing that was different in this cycle. I had used the exact same drugs throughout the treatment that I had used before, had only made minor adjustments in my diet, had stopped my yoga due to its intensity, and at 39 I wasn’t any younger than the last time we tried, so I know without a doubt the acupuncture treatments at Acubalance made all the difference.

We are now in our 21st week of pregnancy with twins! I couldn’t have asked for better results, and without acupuncture I don’t think I would’ve got these results. When spending thousands of $’s on fertility treatments a little more with the addition of acupuncture is soooo worth it. It’s an investment with great returns and rewards, not the least of which is your health, in every way, emotional, physical and mental! I just wish I had learnt of Spence sooner, it’s the only alternative therapy practice I am aware of that can really help as they totally understand, and are trained in, all aspects of reproduction and conventional fertility treatments, enabling them to safely incorporate their own treatments into any other fertility treatment one may be undergoing. I have been treated by every member of the staff and have nothing but good things to say about them. Acubalance is the only place I know of where every member of staff really does care about the outcome of your treatment. I would recommend them to anybody who will listen.

In closing I would like to say to all of you reading this, looking for hope and successful stories, I know what you’re going through, just don’t give up hope, it’s all we really have. I truly believe something good comes out of everything, absolutely everything that happens in our lives (even the not so pleasant stuff), and if being a parent is the best and right thing for you, it’ll happen. Don’t worry about the when, the universe times everything perfectly, it’ll happen at the perfect time!
(for my husband and I it has been 20 years in the making!)

UPDATE: This is just a quick update to my original submission back in January (titled 20 Year Journey Almost Completed), for anyone who may have read that submission and wondered what the outcome was. I am happy to report my twins (a girl and a boy) arrived in April, a little early (delivered at 33 weeks) but still very healthy, strong and beautiful (weighing 4lbs 1oz and 3lbs 9ozs). They are now 4 months old and doing well. They didn’t need any ventilation assistance and were off of their IV’s before a week was up!! I credit this great outcome to the assistance of acupuncture and the Acubalance team again. Thank you guys, may all your dreams and wishes come true the way you’re helping make other’s dreams come true. 🙂

Wishing you all a successful journey.

Hi there! I have a story to share…
Hi there! I have a story to share…
Hi there! I have a story to share…

My husband (age 38) and I (age 36) tried to get pregnant for one year – which isn’t that long, really, but when you want something badly, any amount of time can be frustrating. I know firsthand how much it sucks to get your period and then wait another month and so on…

We tried everything from BBT, going broke from ovulation kits, very unsexy timed sex…you name it. I heard about Spence in April 2009 after realizing that my stressful job combined with a tendency to pick up every bug that was going around (was just getting over bronchitis) was not helping us reach our goals. After a year, our infertility was unexplained, and after having two of my best friends resort to multiple rounds of IVF after years of trying, I didn’t want to waste any time. We have always wanted to be parents – more than anything in the world.

I went to see Spence and immediately was told I needed to change my diet and tone down the active lifestyle. I replaced boot camp with yoga. I went weekly for three months. Spence put me on a 3 week cleanse and during and after – as hard as it was at first – I’ve never felt better in my life. As much as I love my job, I tried to give it some balance.

After two months of changing my diet and exercise routines, lowering my stress level – combined with positive thinking – I decided to be proactive and go back to PCRM (where we had conducted our tests) to try an IUI in order to maximize our chances. We agreed to try a few cycles and then assess from there. Coupled with Clomid, I went for my first IUI (AKA turkey baster) in early June, and towards the end of the month (refraining from obsessing and spending too much $$ on home pregnancy tests) I got a very exciting phone call that my blood test was positive and that I was due in March!

I was shocked but so excited… and I was proud of the work I put into improving my health and general well being – it was more than worth it.

We had our first ultrasound last week…and…two heartbeats! Again, an absolute shock but definite joy. Twins were the last thing we were expecting, but we’ve gone through a lot to get to this point – both as individuals and as a couple – more than what I can write in this entry.

Anyway, I hope our story gives you hope… If I can give any advice – keep positive, try not to obsess, educate yourself, and be proactive! Obviously I highly recommend Acubalance – it’s a supportive, healthy and wonderful place with great staff and worth the investment of time and money. No matter what happens…you’ll feel empowered and healthier than ever.

Good luck to everyone!

Unexplained infertility and several unsucessful IVFs
Unexplained infertility and several unsucessful IVFs
Unexplained infertility and several unsucessful IVFs

My husband and I decided to have a child when I was 30. We stopped BCP, but nothing happened! After 7 months of trying we went to see the doctor and she did all possible tests, which came back completely normal. The following 6 years we did not use any birth control and I got pregnant 3 times – all miscarriages. Fertility clinics labeled me with “unexplained infertility”. At age 36 we tried a few IUI – no result. We moved on to IVF.

I had my IVF cycle in Toronto at very popular and busy clinic. LOL The Doctor said that my ovaries looked very good and my blood test (FSH etc) looked good too. However, the lining of the uterus was a bit on a thin side … To increase our chances he suggested that we use a surrogate. I was lucky – a woman who agreed to be my surrogate happen to be the most wonderful person on Earth! She agreed to help and I started the stims. At that time I was working on a very intense project at work, very often I stayed over time… being constantly under pressure I did not realize how stressed I was. I was sweating at work all the time – never at home, I had heart palpitations at the office all the time -never on the weekends etc…

However I HAD NO IDEA how important it was to maintain the balance in life! I thought the fertility drugs will do the job: my body will make the eggs! I started the stims and on Day 5 of my IVF Cycle I traveled to Toronto. The rest of my cycle I was totally jet lagged and did not eat well (fertility drugs made me a bit sick on my stomach and I had no appetite). As a result I lost a few pounds instead of gaining as I expected and was completely exhausted… However my RE managed to get 17 eggs and 7 healthy looking embryos out of them. Both my surrogate and I had a transfer and full of hope went home. The result was devastating: I did not get pregnant – she miscarried at 6 weeks. What happened later I would call a nightmare: the doctor called me and said that “he strongly suggests that we move to donor eggs now”. My surrogate said that she was afraid to miscarry again and she would not transfer my eggs anymore…. My husband was devastated… He wanted to have my baby so much! It was so important for him!

I decided not to give up and started my research: I found TCM clinic in Vancouver and booked an appointment. This was the best decision I have ever made in my life!!! I met Dr. Erin Flynn at the clinic, told her about my situation and we started our work together. I had acupuncture twice a week , and in a mean time I changed my diet, drank some herbal medicine, following her suggestions, stopped stressing at work, and started meditating and practicing yoga. Three months later I noticed a tremendous difference in how I felt: I was full of energy, I felt I could run a Marathon! I had another IVF cycle right after that and the Doctor had to stimulate my ovaries for 3 days less than the first time. We got 14 eggs and 7 embryos and my surrogate got pregnant! (She decided to try one more time, seeing how hard I was working on nourishing my ovaries). She got pregnant and now, 10 months later, I’m looking at my 1 month old precious daughter sleeping in her bassinet 🙂

The Doctor said he was surprised with the result! But I was not! I knew what kind of job Erin and I did to achieve that result! Yes, Western Doctors will tell you that there is no scientific evidence that TCM works – but if you feel your body – you can tell: yes it does!

Based on my experience I would say: Give it a try! It would not hurt, right? Don’t listen if Western Doctors tell you that your eggs are bad. They tell that to everybody so that we would blame on our body, not on the doctors. The truth is – Western doctors can’t help you to improve quality of your eggs, if it was compromised by poor diet, stress, and environment. But you can help yourself! Work on your balance, get plenty of rest, follow your TCM Doctor’s dietary recommendations – and believe me, the chances that your next cycle will be “surprisingly” successful – are super high!

In conclusion I want to thank Dr Erin Flynn for her help! She did a great job guiding me out of the woods of poor balanced life! She helped me to see the Sun shining again. After our appointments I left my depression behind and now I know the techniques how to keep it at bay! I also would like to thank an amazing woman, my surrogate, for her help to bring my baby to this would – she is happy to be here with her mom and dad! I also want to thank all the people who helped me not to lose hope!

I hope more and more women will awake to acceptance of TCM as a tool to improve fertility and overall health!

Spence was recommended by PCRM…
Spence was recommended by PCRM…
Spence was recommended by PCRM…

When I first decided to do acupuncture before ivf I was not sure if it would help but thought I’m desperate so after reading up on the Internet along with the thousand other articles I read I decided it was worth a try. Spence was recommended by Pcrm and I wanted someone who worked with their team. My back story is that we had tried to have a baby for 3 years with 3 failed attempts with iui. We were only planning to do ivf 1 time (so we said but you never know) so I was willing to try anything. Going into I never expected to achieve the sense of serenity I had. I saw spence 2 times a week for about a month and then 1 x a week up until the ivf procedure and about 3 weeks or so after I forget exactly. Spence was wonderful, so caring and understanding in such a difficult time and I really consider him a friend. My husband and I decided to keep our struggle with infertility private so spence was our support really as even our family was not in the loop. Being a type a personality I thought I’d never be relaxed or even calm going into ivf but the acupuncture really taught me how to center myself and more importantly find my happy place. I’ve found it has helped in other areas of my life too when I get super stressed I’m able to go back to that happy place and let go. By the time we were doing ivf I had really achieved a zen like quality to it all which is all thanks to spence and the treatments I received. I was really able to visualize a life with child but more importantly I was also able to visualize a life without child and even plan for it if our 1 time ivf was not successful. This is a place I never thought I’d reach and feel that this is truly what helped my ivf be successful. You defiantly have to go into it in a good state of mind. I would highly recommend spence to anyone :/)

Massage Energy work that relieves dizziness and fatigue

Massage Energy work that relieves dizziness and fatigue

I want to say thank you with all my heart for the treatment you gave me.

I was suffering from extreme dizziness and unusual fatigue and weakness due to side effect of antibiotics, for about three weeks. Before I came for the treatment that you suggested I was functioning at 50% (which is not good at all). After one hour treatment from you, within half an hour that same evening, I felt different (meaning I was functioning at 95% somewhat normally and able to take care of my grandson and play with him). What you did for me was miraculous, just two treatments and I am at 100%.

I also want to say that every time I have come in for a massage treatment, I have walked out healed. Thank you so much Natalie Woodhouse. I highly recommend your services. You truly have angel hands. May your spirit touch everyone. Thank you.

RMT Making my Pregnancy More Comfortable
RMT Making my Pregnancy More Comfortable
RMT Making my Pregnancy More Comfortable

I started receiving massages from Natalie in my second trimester and continued to see her every other week throughout the rest of my pregnancy. She was so good and helpful that I upgraded to weekly massages. Natalie took time to assess my body and its changes and ask about areas of concern that needed attention for that session. Each treatment, she worked on my entire body, while focusing special attention and time to the tender areas, so I always left feelings thoroughly satisfied (but wanting more!). She checks in to make sure the pressure is the right fit your comfort and uses enough force to alleviate the sore areas. Her energy is calming, therapeutic, and warm, and she carries herself with the utmost professionalism.

An hour with Natalie is something everyone needs in their life, to alleviate stress, focus on self-care, and relax. Natalie is not only an excellent RMT, she is a genuinely good person. This contributes to her competency and credibility as an RMT – she is a role model for self-care, healthy living, and loving your body. Thank you, Natalie, for making my pregnancy more comfortable. Each treatment caused my life and daily functioning to be so much better!

Acupuncture and Men’s Health

Acupuncture and Men’s Health

Hi, my name is Gianni, I’m 49 years old and had been struggling with erectile disfunction since the age of 40. I was prescribed Cialis and Viagra at different times and continued taking them on and off. I had tried to speak to different doctors about my situation and about different options for treatment, the answer was always the same……..take this pill, it will help!……
I got tired and frustrated and began to look into alternative medicines. This is when I found Yinstill clinic on Main st. in Vancouver.
My first appointment I met Sean Quigley, he is a registered acupuncturist. He made me feel comfortable and not worried. I was amazed at the results, and within the first two sessions of acupuncture I was achieving erections without any pills!! I am so grateful to Sean and Yinstill.
Thank you so much
