Stress & Anxiety
Creating calm and resilience on your fertility journey
Do Stress & Anxiety Affect Fertility?
The short answer: yes, they can.
Stress and anxiety are deeply personal experiences – some women seem less affected, while for others the impact is profound. Infertility itself can be one of life’s greatest emotional challenges, often bringing heightened worry, fear, and uncertainty. What we do know is that stress and anxiety can influence the body in ways that matter for reproductive health.
How Stress & Anxiety Impact Fertility
Research suggests that stress and anxiety may:
- Disrupt hormonal balance and ovulation
- Affect sexual health in both women and men
- Lower sperm quality and quantity
- Negatively influence IVF outcomes
- Contribute to miscarriage risk by affecting blood flow and oxygen supply
And yet, this is not the whole story. Recognizing the effects of stress and anxiety can also empower you to make choices that restore calm and strengthen resilience.
The Hormone Connection
Two key hormones link stress, anxiety, and fertility:
- Cortisol — the body’s main “stress hormone,” released to help us manage challenges. In healthy amounts it’s useful, but when stress or anxiety is prolonged, excess cortisol can interfere with reproductive hormones.
- Progesterone — the hormone that prepares the uterine lining for implantation and supports early pregnancy. When cortisol levels are consistently high, progesterone levels may be lower, which can affect fertility and pregnancy support.
