Your Third Trimester Guide

Preparation • Nesting • Surrendering to the Birth Process

The third trimester (weeks 28–40+) is a time of both anticipation and transformation. Your baby is growing rapidly, your body is preparing for labour, and your mind is adjusting to the reality that birth is near.

Many women spend the early months intentionally not thinking about labour  – it feels far away. But by the third trimester, the awareness arrives:
You will soon meet your baby.

This realization can bring a mix of emotions:

  • Excitement
  • Nervousness
  • Surrender
  • Curiosity
  • A deep instinct to nest and prepare

All of these are normal. And you’re not alone  – nearly 300,000 women give birth every day worldwide, joining a universal rhythm of motherhood that stretches across all cultures and time.

Nesting and Preparing Your Space

The third trimester is the natural time to organize, prepare, and create a safe and comforting environment for your baby.

Air quality and home setup

If you are painting or buying new furniture, it’s ideal to have the nursery finished around 3 months before birth to allow paint and materials enough time to off-gas.

Many baby items  – cribs, strollers, car seats  – can also take longer to arrive than expected, so ordering early reduces stress later.

Essentials to have ready

  • A safe place for baby to sleep
  • Car seat installed and checked
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Basic clothing
  • A plan for meals and support during the first weeks postpartum
  • Your hospital or birth center bag

Nesting is more than logistics  – it’s part of your psychological preparation, helping you feel grounded and ready for the transition into parenthood.

Sleep Challenges in the Third Trimester

Difficulty sleeping is extremely common. Your growing belly, hip pressure, frequent urination, and hormonal shifts all contribute.

You may find yourself:

  • Constantly adjusting pillows
  • Switching sides
  • Getting up multiple times
  • Waking early
  • Feeling restless or uncomfortable

Sleep support strategies

  • Experiment with a body pillow
  • Place a pillow between your knees for hip alignment
  • Stretch gently before bed
  • Read or listen to something calming if you wake at night
  • Avoid forcing sleep  – get up, reset your body, and return to bed
  • Nap during the day when needed

Your body is working hard. Rest in any form counts, and you will need that energy for labour, recovery, and newborn care.

Monitoring Your Health
(Iron, Immunity, and More)

As the third trimester progresses, it’s common to feel more tired. Some of this is natural  – but low iron (anemia) can also contribute.

Iron

Your provider may recheck iron levels in the third trimester. If low, supplements like Floradix or Hemoplex are often recommended.

Probiotics

There is growing evidence supporting probiotic use in late pregnancy. Benefits may include:

  • Reduced risk of Group B Strep colonization
  • Lower need for IV antibiotics in labour
  • Decreased risk of eczema and allergies in infants
  • Improved maternal gut health and immune support

Always choose high-quality probiotics and follow your provider’s guidance.

Slowing Down: Why Rest Matters Now

It is strongly recommended to stop working around 3 weeks before your due date if possible.

Why?

  • Your body needs time to slow down and unwind
  • It reduces stress and improves sleep
  • You can wrap up loose ends without rushing
  • It helps you enter labour with more reserves and calm
  • You have time to mentally and emotionally prepare
  • You are creating space for one of the biggest life transitions you’ll ever experience

Rest is not a luxury  – it’s part of preparation for labour.
A well-rested body copes better, labours more efficiently, and recovers faster.

Emotional Preparation and Surrender

It’s normal for your thoughts about labour to evolve during this trimester. Many women notice a shift:

At first → Anxiety, uncertainty, fear
Later → Trust, surrender, readiness

Your brain and hormones are preparing you for the instinctive, powerful process of birth.

What helps:

  • Educating yourself about labour
  • Working with your doula (if you have one)
  • Practicing relaxation and breathing
  • Talking through fears with your provider
  • Visualizing a calm, supported birth
  • Remembering your body knows how to do this

Your confidence builds as your support system grows.

How Acupuncture Supports the Third Trimester

Acupuncture in late pregnancy is safe, supportive, and commonly recommended.

It can help with:

  • Low back or pelvic pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Leg cramps
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Digestive issues
  • Swelling
  • Preparation for labour and cervical ripening (starting ~36 weeks)

Acupuncture also supports nervous system regulation, which helps your body enter labour in a calmer, more centred state.
