Armpits for August: PCOS gets its own awareness month

PrintSend by emailPDF

This month marks the second annual event named Armpits 4 August, an event that raises awareness for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Although not as well known as Movember, the month in which men grow their moustaches for prostate cancer awareness, Armpits 4 August will likely see an increase in the number of supporters for this years event. So if you see women with fuzzy underarms you now know why they are doing it and you may even want to ask them if you can donate to their cause.

As someone who treats a number of women with PCOS, I support this movement. With almost 30% of women of reproductive age suffering from this disease, we need to see better diagnostic criteria and improved medical interventions for its treatment. Currently, many women if they are not trying to conceive are put on birth control to suppress the signs and symptoms of PCOS. This approach only delays the need for further treatment and further compounds the hormonal imbalance present with PCOS. Many support groups and education websites have formed to provide some of the missing information. Complementary medicine such as Acupuncture, Chinese medicine and Naturopathic approaches are more aimed at treating the mechanism and educating women on treatment strategies through diet and exercise. This is a very treatable condition when the proper approach is taken. For women that have PCOS and are considering having a child, I highly recommend getting your cycle regulated first and balancing both the endocrine and metabolic systems.
