Polycystic ovary syndrome is a complicated condition. Any medical condition referred to by the term ‘syndrome’ means it is a collection of signs & symptoms that commonly show up in a similar patient population, and this is an early attempt to begin to diagnose these people. From a clinical perspective, it is quite easy to determine whether a woman falls into the category of PCOS. Irregular menstrual cycles/ovulation, male hormone excess (acne, hair growth/loss), and obesity are the most common signs. This may be further confirmed by ultrasound displaying cystic ovaries, and by blood work potentially showing FSH:LH ratio irregularities, insulin resistance (HbA1C, fasting insulin), high androgen hormones, and high AMH levels.
A caveat here is that women can also be ‘atypical’ or ‘thin’ PCOS type, meaning they are not overweight. This population of patients still most often display some or most of the other signs discussed above, but with one common denominator that may be at the very root of PCOS, and can be effectively treated with diet – insulin resistance. Yes you can be insulin resistant and not overweight.
In a world where diabetes is quickly moving into the #1 spot for causes of death, we must all become more aware of what causes this condition, and particularly if you have PCOS as in many respects, this is a pre-diabetic condition. It is key to eat right for your PCOS type. Maybe most importantly, it is something that is passed along to off-spring, so getting healthy and properly managing diet and blood sugar before conception is the best gift someone can give their child-to-be.
